April 2nd. 2009: “It’s his willingness to buy a sailboat with his last dollar after seven minutes worth of consideration.”
We decide to look online for boats instead. We head to the library downtown under perfectly sunny skies, pushed along by a warm breeze. Around the corner of the library building is a perfect line of clouds. It stretches all the way across the New Orleans skyline. While we explore Ebay, the sky goes dark and heavy and the warm breeze turns into a howling wind and a torrential rain begins to splatter the city. Just outside the window next to which we sit, a poor bum stands on the library porch wrapped in a blanket, looking forlornly out into the bleakness.
We find a 26’ Southcoast Seacraft from the 70’s on sale for a “buy it now” price of $3,695. It’s in Maryland, Near Baltimore. We contemplate it for a moment, then Garth heads home to occupy himself with other things while I stay behind for a few hours to use the internet.
I return to find him sleeping on the couch. He sits up. I sit next to him. “I think we should get that ‘Buy it now’ boat,” he says. “
“Me, too,” I say with a giant grin.
We go to St. Charles Street and find a bar with wireless and email the seller, Jeffrey, letting him in on our decision. Then we go home and pack up everything in our apartment.
I never thought I’d meet another person who is as impulsive as I am. Next time anyone asks me what it is I like about Garth, I’ll say, “It’s his willingness to buy a sailboat with his last dollar after about seven minutes worth of consideration.”
