April 30th. 2009: Running Low, Getting Restless

Garth and I took that bike ride to Fleeton today. It was another post-card north-east beach town with big houses, nice lawns, winding lanes and a white sand shore. It had 89 people and 18 dogs according to the sign at city limits. We sat on the beach for a few minutes, then rode back toward Reedville, exploring a couple side roads on the way. There was a crab shack and deli on one road, and a little grocery store called Barne’s, on the other. I wanted to stop and get a notebook because mine was running out, but the store only takes cash. We don’t have any. The ride was only 10 miles altogether, and I wanted to explore more roads, but my bike is now rusty from sea fog and very hard to pedal.

Upon our return to the Crazy Crab, we met with Charles. He said he’d have work for us this weekend. He remembered Garth’s name, but had to ask mine again and write it down. My name is not very distinct. And, apparently, I myself am not very memorable. I suppose it’s because I said all of 3 words during the first conversation Garth and I had with Charles. I’d smiled and nodded for a hour and let Garth do all the talking. I never know what to say. I feel like I don’t know anything about anything. I certainly don’t know about building restaurants and marinas. That’s what they talked about. Garth seems to be able to converse about anything. I’m very easy to upstage in that sense. We spent the afternoon eating Ramen and reading. Garth slept most of the evening. I finished a painting. We went to bed before sundown.

I can’t sleep. I think too much about money, work, writing, and how I’m going to function in the world. Garth and I are both getting restless. We’ll want to leave soon if nothing happens. The problem is, we’ve eaten half our food while waiting around here and we don’t have money to buy more. Also, we’ve stayed in Charles’ boat slip for 3 nites and don’t have money to pay the rent. We HAVE to stay and work now, no matter how bored we get.

It was Garth’s 31st birthday today. His family said they were going to deposit money in his bank account. We were going to get a decent dinner. It didn’t work out.
